History Databases Brightspace / Desire2Learn (D2L) LTI Insert Stuff Plugin Installation

Customers using the Brightspace / Desire2Learn (D2L) learning management system can embed content from History Databases directly in their courses.  Below, you will find instructions for installing and configuring the History Databases Insert Stuff Framework plugins (ISF).  For more information, please refer to the History Databases Desire2Learn Insert Stuff Framework Plugin Overview article.


The remote plugins provide a rich integration between History Databases and your D2L courses.  Users of D2L will able to embed History Database resources directly inside their courses, without having to leave the LMS.  This plugin is LTI based and integrates directly into the standard D2L ISF button found wherever the HTML editor is within D2L.



Prerequisites for Installing the History Databases ISF Plugin:

  1. You must have your own instance of Desire2Learn running.

  2. You must have an active History Database subscription.

  3. Your LTI Access Key and Secret which can be obtained from History Database support.


Remote Plugin Installation:

  1. Login to your D2L instance as an administrator with access to install and configure remote plugins.

  2. Click on the Admin Tools menu and select Remote Plugins.

  3. Click on the "New Remote Plugin" button to create a new plugin.

  4. You will go to the Create a new Remote Plugin page. All six Infobase History database plugins will need to be individually installed - American HistoryAmerican Indian History, African-American History, Ancient and Medieval History, Modern World History, and History Reference Center, our history and religion cross search.

    On the Create a new Remote Plugin page, enter these values into the corresponding fields.

    1. Plugin Type - Change the Plugin Type to Insert Stuff

    2. Name - Enter the name of the History database or anything else you would like to use to help identify this plugin.

    3. Launch Point URL-

      American History - Enter:
      American Indian History - Enter: 
      African American History - Enter:
      Ancient and Medieval History - Enter:
      Modern World History - Enter:
      History Research Center - Enter:

    4. LTI Key - Enter the access key you obtained from support. 

    5. LTI Secret - Enter the secret you obtained from support.

    6. System Test URL - Skip this field.

    7. Description - Enter your own text description of this tool, or copy this description, "Search available History Databases resources. A new icon will  appear in your course rich editor enabling you to search History Databases and to embed records in your course material."

    9. Make available to - Before this plugin will show up on the ISF menu, you need to add applicable Org Units.  By default, you should see, "Current Org Unit: <your school>" listed.  Before this plugin will display as an option, you need to add a second entry that includes options for all descendants.  To do this. click on the  "Add Org Units" button. Find your main Org unit, check the box to activate it, and then select the "All descendants" radio button.  Click Insert to add this second Org Unit.

    10. Click on the Save button to save your remote plugin.
